Calls Mount for AG King’s Resignation
SANTA FE, NM- For some time now, KKIM’s Dewey Moede has been calling for the resignation of New Mexico’s attorney general, Gary King. Moede has identified many cases that qualify to call for King’s need to step down, from the famed pay to play scandal that prevented former governor Richardson from being appointed to Obama’s cabinet to the failed prosecution of ex-Secretary of State
Rebecca Vigil-Girón.
Now other voices are joining the KKIM station manager. Last Saturday, the Santa Fe New Mexican called for Gary King to resign. Heath Haussamen has documented many of the issues being faced by the attorney general and has been careful to avoid personal attacks, but the conclusions are the same, Mr. King should step down.

I heartily agree, he has got to go. Why didn’t King go after Mary Herrera or Bill Richardson? They were his buddies, or knew too much. I was one of several citizens that attended the March conflict of interest hearings in the Vigil-Giron case. I came away thinking the wrong side was being prosecuted. I think that when you look at what was said in the 4 day hearing ordered by a judge to review the depth of Gary King’s conflicts of interest in the Rebecca Vigil-Giron case, you find that King has a nose like Pinnocchio and was using this case for political promotion. King was ordered by the judge to testify, the first time a NM Attorney General was ordered to do so. King opposed the subpoena and lost, so he testified March 15. He stated that he does not manage his Criminal Division, and has no idea what goes on. He testified that he does not run the Civil Division that handles the contracts in question in the case, and does not know what goes on there. When questioned about a letter to the editor that he signed claiming he is personally in charge of these things, he said he signs the letters his Communications Division prepares for his signature but does not know what is in them and does not write them.
When asked about his claim that he had no conflict of interest in the case, and that he separated himself with a “Chinese Wall” the previous two years, two of his own staff later testified the Chinese Wall separating him had been put in effect 10 days prior to the hearing. King denied that his former employee, Elizabeth Kupfer, was dragged into the case by other King co-workers for revenge. Why, because testimony showed she had fired them a few years earlier, then rehired by King, who turned around and assigned them to her case. After denying for years that she was involved in the termination of the lead prosecutor, King’s own Personnel director testified and introduced the termination paper with her signature on it. Another witness testified he was present when Kupfer tried to report a scheme by King to use the public corruption cases to get headlines to propel himself to Governor in 2014, 2 years before she was charged, but the legislators she reported it to advised King instead of taking action.
When King was running against Matt Chandler, Matt accused him of a serious bias and conflict in this case, and King got offended. He claimed Matt was undermining law enforcement. A judge has enforced what Matt saw 6 months ago. Matt is so honest he gave up numerous cases if he had a conflict, but King never will. The AG’s office is a sewer, and Matt Chandler could have cleaned it up. King should resign.
Attorney General Gary King has had the free ride of the powerful King dynasty for far too long. He was born with a political silver spoon in his mouth, a spoiled son of a political King. He has no real world experiences that help him to relate to regular people that work for a living, and he feels entitled that us serfs need to serve him.
After seeing how King went after a former employee who campaigned against for his opponent, he became the true definition of abuse of power.
I worked with Elizabeth Kupfer for many years, she is a God-fearing girl who found the Lord in the 1980′s. She had ironclad faith and witnessed to me, before I was saved. I remember when she got in trouble with then Governor Bruce King’s office back when she worked at state police around 1992 because she forced them to pay some money back when she audited some spending, part of her job in auditing state agencies at the time. I think she landed up in this because her and her husband campaigned so hard against Gary King when he ran for attorney general, and Elizabeth supported Casey Luna against Bruce King back in 1994 or 95. I just do not see how it is fair that King is now allowed to be the one to go after her.
Resignation by King is definitely overdue.
Some critics feel the elected officials of the King family have become rich while in public office, looking beyond their public salary to their private business concerns as reported by a tiny local newspaper. http://www.sfreporter.com/santafe/blog-2321-king-corn-the-family-connection.html Gary King who already had an interest in the family businesses has probably inherited 50% of his parent’s interests.
“King Brothers Ranch” is the top-ranked farm subsidy beneficiary in their county, has received millions of taxpayer agricultural subsidies to grow corn and/or alfalfa.
“Pine Canyon Ranch Corp.”, which receives federal subsidies for conservation reserve programs while they claim it will be a future subdivision and sell parts of it. http://ballaspropertiesofnm.com/subdivisions/pinecanyonranch.html
“Estancia Basin Water Supply”, which is regulated by the Water Division of the Attorney General’s Office and the PRC, is partly owned by David King and I am not sure who else.
Rhonda King is a legislator, first cousin of Gary King and David King. She votes on the legislature finance committee which approves funds for the Attorney General’s office, the State Land Commission, and the PRC.
“King Land & Cattle Co.” has state land leases, a rancher can lease land to run cattle on for low prices. Jerry King is Rhonda Kings brother and is cousin to Gary and David, he works at the state Land Commissioners Office that determines who gets state land leases and for how much according to this article. http://newmexicoindependent.com/35498/is-written-disclosure-of-a-conflict-of-interest-sufficient The article is about how a state legislator complained that he was lobbied on issues regarding leases, and was upset that King had a conflict of interest.
“King Butane Inc.” is a propane company regulated by the Attorney General’s office and the PRC. Also complaints against propane delivery services go to the Attorney General’s office Consumer Division, headed by Gary King. This company and others in this list have made substantial campaign contributions to Rhonda and Gary.
Of course the news stories of big land swaps of remote King land for prime state land while Bruce King was Governor are legend. The kings have been accused by citizens of using their public office, state agencies, or legal maneuvers to take their land, sections of land grants or water rights. It probably helps to be in public office if your hands are in this may interests that depend so much on tax dollars and public regulation, funding, and law enforcement positions to protect the whole thing.
They have another name for families with this kind of far-reaching power in Chicago. Oh well, if we can’t beat them, we better join them or Gary King will prosecute you. Long live the King Family Dynasty!
