7-11 Gunman Captured
Albuquerque police have captured the armed gunman who shot and killed a 7-Eleven convenience store clerk early Tuesday morning.
Police arrested Eloy Aguilar, 22, Wednesday afternoon after they said he was the triggerman in the killing of a 7-Eleven clerk, later identified as Chad Mercer, 36.
Aguilar was arrested at his apartment complex located at Comanche and Carlisle.
“He was cooperative. Turns out he was hiding in an apartment that we were conducting surveillance on,” Officer Robert Gibbs said.
Officer Gibbs said homicide detectives were watching Aguilar at his apartment after interviews helped them identify him. According to the criminal complaint, Julian DeHerrera, 20, named Aguilar as the shooter.
According to police Aguilar and two other men, identified as DeHerrera and Dylan Villarreal, 22, went to the convenience store on Central and University around 1 a.m. Tuesday, allegedly with the intention to rob the store.
Police said when Aguilar went inside the store, the two other men robbed a group of people outside at gunpoint.
According to a criminal complaint, the two were still outside the 7-Eleven when Aguilar shot and killed the clerk inside.
Police arrested DeHerrera and Villarreal on Wednesday after locating them, using a Global Positioning System on an iPhone they took during the robbery
All three men are facing first-degree murder charges along with multiple charges.
